Herb Karkau

Herbert S. Karkau East Lansing It is with great sorrow that the family of Herbert S. Karkau announces his passing on October 17, 2009 in East Lansing, MI of complications resulting from multiple myeloma. Born October 31, 1942, Herb was the 10th of 11 children. He is predeceased by his daughter, Jacquelyn; parents, Emil and Eva Marie (Longacre) Karkau; brothers, Lawrence, Tom, Joe, Bill, Rudy and Brian; and his sister, Doris Sharp. Herb is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Elizabeth; sons, Steven (Carmen), Scott (Annette) and Patrick, and will be greatly missed by his three grandchildren, Drew, Alex and Katelynn. He also leaves behind two sisters, Ferne (Carl) Preston and Janice (Lawrence) Thompson, as well as his brother, Bob (Mary Lou), along with in-laws, Delores, Denalda and Martha Karkau, Fred Sharp and Mary Mapes. Herb graduated in 1960 from Lansing Eastern and went on to become a master electrician and a member of IBEW 665 for 43 years. Herb pitched on many local fast-pitch softball teams in the 60's, through mid 80's. Herb was a man of vision and ideas, and was never hesitant to share advice and counsel with friends and strangers alike. Herb and his wife Liz remodeled many homes in the Lansing, Eaton Rapids and Grand Ledge areas. He and Liz also founded and operated the Bridge St. Church Antique Mall in Grand Ledge and the Mega Mall in Lansing. A memorial service will be held for Herb on Thursday, October 22 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Grand Ledge. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation, Sparrow Hospice or a charity of your choice. Herb is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He was genuinely kind and friendly, and will be missed by all who knew him. I wish his family well, and leave them with the knowledge that there are others out there who also miss Herb. God Bless you all.
